Meet Kel Byron
Kel never planned on being an author.
Growing up in rural Michigan, Kel always dreamed of leaving the area to pursue a career in comic book art, with literature far off her radar. But her upbringing was already a gothic tale: medically fragile and living in her grandparents’ 19th century home, she was surrounded by wetlands in a village so small that the graveyard was more populous than the community itself.
Writing short stories became a way to express herself, especially after becoming a caregiver for both her grandfather and her mother at a young age. Despite her seclusion, she found community by entering fiction contests and writing for the school journal, which led classmates and instructors to persuade her to post her work online. She did, and much to her surprise, her gloomy and deeply personal stories about addiction, isolation, and hometown horror quickly formed a humble fanbase.
Kel disappeared from the internet in 2018 to privately deal with an ongoing medical crisis. Almost immediately after surgery and being declared cancer-free in 2022, she returned to pick up where she left off. In 2023, she self-published her first novel, A Lonely Broadcast: Book One, and dedicated it to everyone who had stood by her during her departure. Kel’s work often focuses on themes of queer identity, grief, mental health, disability, and found family.
Today, Kel still lives in Michigan, splitting her time between writing and animal advocacy through local TNR and rescue. She is a cat mom to Primrose, Fred, Cid Finalfantasy, Loki, Ouija, and Poe, as well as over 150 former neonatal kittens and one foster puppy. She's learning to play Magic: the Gathering, but she isn't very good at it. Her favorite movie is Mystery Men and her favorite musician is London After Midnight.
